There’s smoke damage throughout a house south of Marseilles after a fire late Thursday night. Grand Ridge Fire Department Chief Timothy Geiger says damage directly from the flames is limited to the kitchen. The fire appears to have started when a cigarette or something else burning went into a trash can.

Fire fighters from the Marseilles, Seneca, Wallace, and Streator departments helped. No one was hurt, but the Marseilles and Streator ambulance services were called. The fire was on E. 24th Rd. west of the LaSalle Station nuclear power plant.

A fire truck water pump froze on the way to the fire, making a challenge along with the fire fighters having to be out in the cold.
