A young woman working as a clinical instructor in a private nursing college who was riding pillion on a hired two-wheeler died in a crash after a concrete mixer vehicle hit the two-wheeler on Friday morning.

Police said Mouli Adhikary, 23, died on the spot and the motorcyclist has been hospitalised with minor injuries.

The police said both were wearing helmets. The crash happened around 8.30am on Behala’s SN Roy Road in southwest Kolkata.

Mouli’s father, Nabin Adhikary, told The Telegraph that Mouli had completed her nursing training from a college in Odisha and was working at the Sovarani Nursing College in Jadavpur over the past year.

“She was staying in a rented apartment with one of her friends. She went to a friend’s place last night and was going for duty on Friday morning when this happened,” said Nabin, who is attached to the correctional services and is posted in Purulia.

The family is originally from Chandipur in Purba Medinipur.

The biker, whom police identified as Anthony Chakraborty, has been admitted to Vidyasagar State General Hospital.

One of Chakraborty’s relatives said he is a resident of Behala and attached to the Rapido bike service.

Officers of Behala police station arrested the driver of the concrete mixer vehicle and seized the vehicle.

The police officers said the body would be sent for post-mortem and the vehicle would undergo a mechanical test to ascertain if it had developed any mechanical glitches.
